Correspondence and a legal opinion prepared for Cesario Eugene Lataillade regarding the ownership of properties formerly owned by his father Cesario Lataillade and his mother Antonia Maria Lataillade and properties jointly owned by Lataillade and his business partner Gaspar Oreña.

Cesario A. Lataillade was a French counsel who arrived in Santa Barbara in 1841. At age 22 he was a merchant involved in the hide and tallow trade along the coasts of North and South America and was purser aboard the brig Chato. He married Antonia María de la Guerra, the fourth daughter of Jose de la Guerra, in 1845 and eventually accumulated at least three large rancho properties in the area, Ranchos Cuyama, Zaca (Saca), and Corral de Cuati (Quati). Their children were Maria Antonia, born in 1846 and Cesario Eugene, born in 1849. After the death of Lataillade in 1849 Antonia married her cousin Gaspar Oreña in 1854 and they had nine children. Oreña acquired Ranchos La Espada and San Julian from the De la Guerras in 1864, as partial payment for money owed him by the De la Guerra siblings. He held on to them until 1867 when he sold them to Thomas Dibblee.
