This manuscript collection was acquired through numerous purchases and gifts by the Department of Special Collections and
Archives at the University of California, Irvine over a period spanning circa 1960-2000.

Scope and Content Summary
The collection comprises a variety of small manuscripts acquired by the Department of Special Collections and Archives at
the University of California, Irvine over a period spanning circa 1960-2000. The majority of the manuscripts are letters or
signatures. Most of the letters in the collection were removed from rare books that were either written by the author of the
letter or were about the author of the letter. The collection also includes items such as photographs, engravings, poems,
autograph books, account books, and newspaper clippings. Some items of note are an envelope addressed by Charles Dickens,
two pages of a manuscript of
The Gilded Age written by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), and six letters written by Upton Sinclair.
