Biography/Administrative History

The Ambassador Hotel opened in 1921 in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Preservationists including the Los Angeles Conservancy were unsuccessful in preventing its demolition in 2005.

Scope and Content of Collection

Photographs, correspondence, press releases, clippings, and memorabilia collected by Jean Stinchfield, Publicity Director, Ambassador Hotel, 1922-1970. Bulk is dated after 1957. [Box 1ov contains scrapbooks.] Photographs of celebrities and political figures; correspondence omits the year 1968 when presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was fatally shot while campaigning at the hotel; memorabilia includes ephemera, programs and miscellaneous publications; materials reflect on the history of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub; a taped interview with Stinchfield in 1987.
