Historical or Biographical Note

Albert W. Newman (1920-2007) was a former California and Hawaiian Sugar Company (C&H Co.) refinery worker and boatyard owner in Vallejo, California.
Albert "Al" William Newman was born July 21, 1920, in Havana, Cuba, to Fred and Fanny Newman. The family immigrated to the United States in 1926. While growing up in Crockett, California, Al received his first camera on his tenth birthday and continued to be an avid photographer all his life. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army. Al married Virginia Rice, his high school sweetheart, in 1943. After his military discharge two years later, Al and Virginia settled in Vallejo, California, where they raised their five adopted children. After working at the C&H Co. sugar refinery for 35 years, Al retired and started a second career. He acquired a bankrupt boatyard in Vallejo and turned it into a thriving business. In 1988, Al and his wife relocated to Shelton, Washington, where he remained until his death on March 17, 2007.
