    Abstract: The collection contains approximately 15,000 negatives and prints along with individual periodicals, personal notes, technical photographic books, manuscripts, and photographic equipment, made or used by Will Connell. Connell photographed virtually every industry in California at the time. He also completed a number of literary projects and artistic endeavors.

    Original negatives are available by appointment, but must be handled by the Curator of Collections. Images should be requested by their print identification numbers.

    Images may be considered for publication with advanced, written permission. UCR/California Museum of Photography assists the Connell family in the administration of Will Connell's copyright.

    Acquisition Information

    Will Connell, son of the photographer, donated the body of work to the UCR/California Museum of Photography, University of California, Riverside in 1990.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Will Connell began his professional career in the late 1920s in California. Publications employing Connell include: Allyear Club, Touring Topics (later Westways), Better Homes & Gardens, Colliers, Weekly Cosmopolitan, Country Gentlemen, Life, Successful Farming, Sunset, Time, U.S. Camera, Woman's Day, Woman's Home Companion, and Vogue.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection is organized within box lot numbers which in turn are organized by job name. Will Connell, as a commercial photographer, arranged his negatives according to the name of the commissioner of the work; the museum has maintained the original order. The dates of the images range from 1926 through 1952, although the majority of negatives originated during the 1930's and 1940's.
