Administrative History
Founder Mike Smith began the first Black and White Men Together (BWMT) group in San Francisco in January 1980. Over the summer,
groups emerged in Chicago, Boston, and New York, and by the next year, chapters had sprung up in 30 cities across the United
States as well as in 3 international locations. The first BWMT conference occurred in San Francisco in 1981 out of which formed
the International Association of Black and White Men Together (IABWMT).
Charles Stewart was elected to a one year term as co-chair of the IABWMT in 1982. He had been a member of the Steering Committee
for the Los Angeles BWMT chapter, secretary of the Gay and Lesbian Police Advisory Task Force, vice-president of the board
of directors of the National Gay Archives, and chairman of the Community Support Committee of Christopher Street West.
Renamed in 1986 as the National Association of Black and White Men Together, the organization, as of 2012, remains a nationwide
network that fosters supportive environments wherein racial and cultural barriers can be overcome. BWMT engages in educational,
political, cultural and social activities as a means of dealing with racism, sexism, homophobia, and HIV/AIDS discrimination.

Acquisition Information
Most of the records in this collection comprise those compiled by Charles Stewart, 1981-1984, although the date and method
of the donation is unknown. Although most of the post-1984 records are from unidentifiable sources, two exceptions are the
awards gifted by Paul Cloutier in 2012, and some materials in the National, convention, and regional files, notably of the
Detroit and Washington D.C. chapters, gifted by Ken Pavlick in 2012.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of the organizational records of the International Association, National Association, and regional
chapters of Black and White Men Together (BWMT), 1981-2006. Most of the records comprise those compiled by Charles Stewart
as co-chair of the International Association, 1982-1983, and as a member of the Los Angeles chapter, 1981-1984. His materials
consist of board records, by-laws, convention records, correspondence, editorial records, educational and political committee
records, election records, financial records, project files, subject files, collaboration files, membership records, status
reports, promotional material, clippings, and general administrative records. Unless otherwise identified, all non-BMTW organizational
listings should be assumed to be subject and/or collaboration files.
The post-1984 records primarily consist of both National Association and regional chapter promotional materials, awards, convention
materials, and clippings. These files include awards donated by former member and National Association co-chair Paul Cloutier
and some regional and national files donated by member Ken Pavlick.
