Abstract: Fred M. Greguras served as a United States Marine in Vietnam in 1970 with Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. He currently works as a partner at a law firm in California, but also researches and writes histories related to the U.S. Marines. The Fred M. Greguras Papers reflect his research and writing interests through manuscripts, research materials, and collected ephemera that document U.S. Marine history, with a particular focus on China Marines.

Biographical Information:

Fred M. Greguras was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 3, 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska, Omaha, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1966 and a Masters of Science in mathematics and computer science in 1968. In 1969, Greguras joined the United States Marine Corps, and in 1970 he served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the Hotel Company, 2 nd Battalion, 5 th Marine Regiment. After completing his service in the Marine Corps as a captain in 1972, Greguras earned a law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1975. He now works in California as a partner in a law firm. In addition to his current employment, Greguras is also a Marine historian, and has taken numerous trips to China where he has researched the locations of Marines stationed in China before and during World War II.

Scope and Contents

The Fred M. Greguras Papers consist of research materials and manuscripts related to the history of the United States Marines in China before and during World War II. Greguras' work has a particular focus on identifying the locations of U.S. Marines stationed in China and how these locations changed in modern times. This includes research on Marine involvement in the Boxer Rebellion in Peking (Beijing) in 1900, the Fourth Marine regiment stationed in Shanghai from 1927 to 1941, and the Marine presence in Tientsin (Tianjin) immediately prior to World War II. There is also a significant amount of material related to China Marines reunions in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The collection is arranged in three series: China Marines Reunion Materials (1986-2016), Manuscripts (2006-2014), and Research Papers and Ephemera (circa 1940-2015).
Series I, China Marines Reunion Materials, includes newsletters, correspondence, audiovisual materials, and ephemera related to China Marines reunion activities. These are arranged chronologically.
Series II, Manuscripts, includes manuscripts written by Fred M. Greguras based upon his research. These are arranged by title, and then chronologically.
Series III, Research Papers and Ephemera, includes research notes, serials, audiovisual materials, and ephmera collected by Greguras in pursuit of his research endeavors. This series also includes maps with notes regarding the locations of U.S. Marines stationed in China during World War II. The areas depicted on the maps include Chinwangtao Town (Qinhuangdao), Tientsin (Tianjin), and Tsingtao (Qingdao). These materials are arranged chronologically.
