Biography/Administrative History

The Sonora Railway was constructed by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway between 1879 and 1882. It ran from Guaymas, on the west coast of the Mexican state of Sonora, northward to Nogales at the United States / Mexican border. From there it connected with the New Mexico and Arizona Railroad, which ran to Benson, Arizona, and then over the Southern Pacific to the tracks of the Santa Fe at Deming, New Mexico. In 1898 the Santa Fe leased the Sonora Railway to the Southern Pacific in return for the latter railroad's line from Needles to Mojave, California. This arrangement continued until December 1911, when the Southern Pacific purchased both the Sonora Railway and the New Mexico and Arizona. The following June, the Sonora Railway became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Mexico.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Sonora Railway Company stock records consist of two volumes, one labeled "Stock Ledger," and the other, "Stock Transfers." These volumes give names, dates and amounts of transfers of stock, as well as new stock issues, beginning in February 1912. These entries are recorded through 1922. The collection also contains typewritten lists of stockholders in the Sonora Railway from 1912 through 1917.
