Sub-series 1.1: Pepperdine Subject Files circa 1957-1998

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains files on various subjects that contain primarily correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, notes, and other paper materials collected in the office of M. Norvel Young during his time at Pepperdine University in the capacity of President, Chancellor, and Chancellor Emeritus. The files contain documentation of university policies and procedures, material generated from administrative work and activities at Pepperdine, Norvel’s community and civic involvement, and information related to interests that would improve the Pepperdine community.

Major topics include accreditation; fundraising and campus campaigns; encouragement of alumni involvement and events; Los Angeles and Malibu campus planning and building; the development of professional schools (including the School of Law, School of Business and Management, and Graduate School of Education and Psychology); campus organizations and programs; budgets and financial plans; donors; community involvement (on advisory boards such as the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, and others); campus issues; travel abroad for public relations purposes; and other topics. There are large groups of files on various trips Norvel took for recruitment of alumni donations, speeches and conferences, and for bestowing honorary degrees, including visits to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Iran, Thailand, Taiwan, and Moscow.

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains files on individual people M. Norvel Young corresponded with or took notes on during his time as President, Chancellor, and Chancellor Emeritus at Pepperdine University. Files mostly contain letters, but sometimes contain newspaper clippings related to the individual.

Sub-series 1.3: Pepperdine Correspondence and Memos 1963, 1966, 1974-1988, 1994-1996

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains Pepperdine University correspondence and interoffice memos collected from M. Norvel Young’s office from 1963 to 1996 that were arranged chronologically by date. Some files contain logs of phone calls from the office as well.

Sub-series 1.4: University Boards and Donors 1957-2003

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains files related to Pepperdine University fundraising, advisory, and governing groups, including the University Board (formerly the President's Board), Pepperdine Associates, Board of Trustees, prospective donors, Board of Regents, and Board of Counselors. Within each group, there are general information files, agendas of meetings, member lists, and individual member files. Some individuals are members of multiple groups, and files with their names may appear more than once.

Files of the Board of Regents and the Board of Trustees are restricted.

Individual member files are arranged alphabetically by name. Meeting agendas are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Content

M. Norvel Young's appointment books are organized chronologically and span from 1943 to 1997. The appointments are for personal and professional events.

Sub-series 1.6: Personal Files 1929-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains materials related to M. Norvel Young's personal life, including personal correspondence, biographies, articles, programs, and speeches about Norvel's life and experiences, ephemera, notes, and various membership cards and licenses.

Specific areas addressed in the series include notes and papers from throughout Norvel's academic career, programs and bulletins from his alma maters, real estate, Norvel's inauguration as President at Pepperdine, his work on histories of the Churches of Christ and Pepperdine, alcoholism, his appointment to Chancellor Emeritus, his illness in 1996, his sabbatical in 1997, and his memorial service. One file of note contains autobiographical notes and Norvel's hopes for the future written early in his career, perhaps in the 1940s.

Sub-series 1.7: Church Files 1930s-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains files about churches and church groups that M. Norvel Young worked for, attended, or collected information about. Files are primarily about Broadway Church of Christ, Vermont Avenue Church of Christ, and Malibu Church of Christ. The files contain newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, letters, promotional material, some correspondence, church bulletins, and historical information.

Sub-series 1.8: 20th Century Christian and Power For Today Files 1950s-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series includes correspondence, notes, historical information, editing work, advertising files and account statements related to the magazine 20th Century Christian and its later branch publication, the daily devotional guide Power for Today. Materials in the series span from the creation of the magazine in 1938 to the early 2000s.

Co-founded by M. Norvel Young, 20th Century Christian, later re-named 21st Century Christian, focused on bringing discussion and encouragement to young adults in the Churches of Christ. Power for Today was founded in 1955 by Norvel and Helen Young, to provide greater encouragement for family devotion.

Sub-series 1.9: Sermons and Speeches 1950s-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains drafts, notes, and final versions of speeches and sermons given by M. Norvel Young. Types of speeches include addresses given at Pepperdine University and other college events, talks given to groups, lectures at Bible Lectureship events, events while abroad, and others. Norvel often spoke at weddings, funerals, baptisms, and other events because of his experience as a pastor.

Arrangement

Some files are arranged alphabetically by sermon topic, such as service, suffering, or sin. Some boxes were described in detail by James Smythe in a separate inventory, and these files are arranged alphabetically by sermon topic.

Sub-series 1.10: Publication Files 1930s-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains drafts, notes, outlines, and final copies of works published by M. Norvel Young, including his PhD dissertation. A prolific author, Young wrote numerous articles on various religious and historical topics for his own publications 20th Century Christian and Power for Today, other church publications, Pepperdine University Publications, and even contributed an article to the Encyclopedia Britannica on the Churches of Christ. The series also covers the numerous books authored by Young, including Living Lights, Shining Stars : Ten Secrets to Becoming the Light of the World, Poison Stress is a Killer, and his work on a USC research study entitled Alcohol, Stress and Traffic Accidents: A Research Study.

Sub-series 2.1: Subject/Correspondence/Speech Files 1950s-2000s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains primarily letters, notes, cards, newspaper clippings, and other saved paper materials on a variety of topics collected by Helen Young. These documents were filed alphabetically on topics for speeches, articles, or classes. Files included a range of topics across the alphabet; for example: comfort, fulfillment, gambling, modesty, women's work, and others. Helen's handwritten notes on many of these topics provide valuable insight into her thoughts on matters over many decades. She also saved files on fundraising projects, Pepperdine history, community involvement, church work, and many other interests.

Most paper materials are foldered in a topically-named folder. There are also a number of boxes with unsorted material. In these boxes, Helen wrote a topic on each item to be filed later.

Sub-series 2.2: Personal and Family History Files 1937-2000s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains Helen Young's personal materials, including two boxes of memory book files and Pepperdine history files throughout the decades. The memory book files are full of newspaper clippings and other saved items that were likely meant to go in a large personal history scrapbook. Other personal materials include biographies of Helen, college course notes, party planning notes and guest lists, Christmas cards and lists of gifts given and received, Associated Women for Pepperdine (AWP) cookbooks, and materials related to the Young home such as construction and design plans, house inventories and guest books.

Also included in the series are materials related to Helen and M. Norvel Young's immediate and extended family. This includes histories and genealogies of the Young, Mattox, and Morrow families; published materials mentioning family members; correspondence between family members; and ephemera from both older generations and the Youngs' children.

Sub-series 2.3: Appointment Books 1940-2003

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains Helen Young's appointment books, which are organized chronologically and span from 1940 to 2003. The appointments are for personal and professional events.

Sub-series 2.4: Publication Files 1960s-1985

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains notes, drafts, outlines and final copies of written works published by Helen Young, including articles but mostly focused on Helen's two books, Children Won't Wait (1985) and Time Management for Christian Women (1990).

Sub-series 2.5: Teaching Files 1940s-1990s

Scope and Content

The sub-series contains notes and course materials related to classes taught by Helen Young at Pepperdine University and various Churches of Christ. The teaching materials from the Churches of Christ focus on general Bible study and the Christian family, while the Pepperdine teaching materials are related to two specific courses taught by Helen, Marriage and Family and Christian Women.

Where possible, the sub-series has been arranged by course topic.

Series 3: Personal and Family Correspondence 1920s-2003

Scope and Content

The series contains correspondence and greeting cards to and from Helen and M. Norvel Young that primarily concerns their personal lives. Some files include letters and cards only to Helen, or only to Norvel, but most correspondence is sent to Helen and Norvel. Family correspondence includes letters sent between Helen and Norvel early in their marriage; letters sent to and from extended family members and Helen and Norvel; and letters between other family members and friends that Helen collected. A significant number of letters were sent to and from Helen’s parents and Norvel’s parents. One box contains letters of concern following Norvel’s car accident in 1975, and another box contains letters sent to Helen following Norvel's death.

Series 4: Travel Files circa 1940-1997

Scope and Content

The series contains correspondence, ephemera (such as postcards and brochures), itineraries, and expenses related to trips Helen and M. Norvel Young took around the world. Most travel in the series is personal, though they did often meet with Pepperdine alumni or carry out church business in conjunction with personal excursions. Norvel and Helen often gave speeches or taught classes while abroad, and some ephemera reflects this. Major trips include visiting England, the Netherlands, France, and Germany; Russia; Thailand and Hong Kong; and Africa. A list of countries Norvel visited between 1937 and 1969 is included.

Series 5: Photos, Scrapbooks, and Slides 1906-2000s

Scope and Content

The series contains photographs (color and black and white), scrapbooks, and slides collected by Helen and M. Norvel Young throughout their life. A large portion of the photographs are family photographs ranging from the early 1900s to the early 1960s. While most of the family photographs were collected by Helen, one box of photos was originally from a box labeled as being from Anne Beattie Smith and Franklin Young (Norvel's sister-in-law and his brother). The photos in the collection are of both Helen and Norvel's extended families and their close friends -- some are labeled and others are unlabeled -- and range in size from tiny cutouts of photographs to formal portraits approximately 8 by 10 inches in size.

Other photographs, scrapbooks and slides come from trips abroad over the decades (including Asia, Iran, and others). The majority of the rest of the photographs are from Pepperdine University events and other Los Angeles-area events from approximately the 1950s to the early 2000s.

Arrangement

Scrapbooks and slides are in their original arrangement. Photographs have been grouped loosely by type (such as family photographs, Pepperdine events, travel, and others). The photos from Anne Beatie and Franklin Young are grouped together. Oversize photographs are grouped together in a larger box.

Series 6: Audiovisual Materials

Scope and Content

The series contains primarily audiocassettes of M. Norvel and Helen Young speaking, recordings related to their activities, or recordings collected by the Youngs. Most of the audiocassettes are sermons. Other items include audio reels and one silent film of Norvel's inauguration as President of Pepperdine.

Note

One film of note is the inauguration of M. Norvel Young as President of Pepperdine University on November 21, 1958. The original film is a silent, black and white, 16mm film with no sound, and the tape is water damaged. A digitized version is available on CD.

Series 7: Personal Financial Files 1930s-1980s

Scope and Content

The series contains files related to investments and personal finance of Helen and M. Norvel Young. Some files include check registers, check logs, and inventories of household expenses. Other files describe insurance and stock investments as well as property purchased.

Scope and Content

The series contains plaques, certificates, and awards given to Helen and M. Norvel Young (separately and together as a couple) throughout their personal and professional lives.

Series 9: Memorabilia and Ephemera 1759, 1882, circa 1903-1990s

Scope and Content

The series contains items of personal value to the Youngs that did not fit in other series, and include a number of three dimensional objects. Some items include a family Bible of S.F. Morrow's (circa 1903, held in Special Collections) given to Emily, a wooden statuette of Dolores (a miniature replica of a former fountain on the Pepperdine campus in Los Angeles), a rolled Christmas letter approximately 20 feet long, a pair of Young family World War II ration booklets, tickets to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, a 1759 manuscript "Of Murder" (with a later note reading "file in church history"), an 1882 graduation speech given by Mallie Young, and other items.
