Biography/Administrative History
The Office of University Advancement has gone through many different name changes throughout the years. It is difficult to
trace its exact origins, but it was likely started in 1960 as a part of John Gothbert’s responsibilities as Coordinator of
Publications. But in 1963 it became its own entity in the form of College‐Community Relations. From there it acquired the
somewhat longer title of Public Affairs & College Relations. In 1970, after a brief period of having no acting director, Durrell
M. Gray took over as acting director of what was then called Information Services, before changing names to back to Public
Affairs in 1971.
The Department of Public Affairs changed its position within the hierarchy of Administration in 1981 and was subsumed under
Business Administration Affairs for several years before being moved back to its original place three years later. That same
year, Durrell M. Gray became the Assistant Director of University Relations and Dennis G. Lavery became the Director. In 1988
the Department of University Relations acquired a new position: News Director, which was filled by Jane Hines. When the name
changed, yet again, to Public Relations, it was forced to operate without a Director or Assistant Director, and the new Director
of News and Publications, Linda J. Schneider, was the entirety of the acting department.
The department changed names again in 1989 to University Relations and Development and was directed by John T. Cain until
Robert L. Trinchero took his place in 1992. In 1994, Trinchero took his place as director of what has since been called University
Advancement with an unfilled position of Assistant Director and Linda J. Schneider as Director of News and Publications. The
Office of University Communications is a department under University Advancement.
