[Identification of item], Photograph album of the 11th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade (Collection 94/95b). UCLA Library
Special Collections, Charles E. Young Research Library, UCLA.
The Rose Parade was created in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena, whose members--many of them emigrés from the East
and Midwest--as a way to show off the mild winter weather of Southern California, and promote the beauty and lush fertility
of the area. The early Rose Parades, with their horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers, and community games in the town
square, soon grew to include marching bands and more elaborate floats, and by 1895 had become too large for the Club to manage.
The Tournament of Roses Association was created to oversee operations and development of the Parade, which has continued to
flourish up to the present day.
Scope and Content
The album contains 13 black-and-white photographs of riders on horseback, bicyclists, marching units, and horse-drawn carriages
and wagons decorated with flowers. The first photo in the album is a shot of the open carriage carrying Maj. Gen. William
R. Shafter, Pasadena Mayor George D. Patten, and Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, president and general manager of the
Los Angeles Times. The carriage, adorned with roses, was drawn by a pair of white horses.
