Abstract: The Barbara O. Schneeman Papers document UC Davis faculty member
Barbara Schneeman's career as teacher, administrator, and public servant. The papers date 1934 to 2007,
with the bulk of the material falling between 1988 and 2006. The collection includes materials related
to Dr. Schneeman's teaching at UC Davis in the Department of Nutrition; her service as Chair of the
Department of Nutrition and of Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and her
work as Assistant Administrator for Nutrition in the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA). The collection also includes a small set of photographs.

Schneeman, Barbara O.
Barbara O. Schneeman received her bachelor's degree in food science and technology from the University of
California, Davis in 1970. In 1974, she recieved her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley
and continued on to postdoctoral training in gastro-intestinal physiology at Children’s Hospital in
Oakland, California.
From 1976-2007, Dr. Schneeman was Professor of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis. During
this time, she also served in several administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of
Nutrition (1988-1993), Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (1993-1999), and
Associate Vice Provost for University Research (2001-2004). In addition to her academic career, Barbara
Schneeman has been active in many state, national, and international organizations, including the
National Academies of Science, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United Nations, the
World Health Organization, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Institute of Food
Technologists.
Currently, Dr. Schneeman is Director of the Office of Nutrition, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements in the
Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the United States Food and Drug Administration
(FDA).
