Dreary, rainy day fell by severe heavy what like the weather, to use a [printer's phrase]. Am out of sorts. One year ago today
was enjoying myself, at Gen'l [illegible] Hayes Hd. Qrs. he is no more now. the pleasant Camp and its good old associations
are gone except in memory. The War news this mornig was good our great planner of campaigns Sherman has served himself and
before long he will make himself [felt], in a [locality] where he is little expected. at work as usual in the office, but
little to do. Am thinking of taking a course of instruction in Book keeping from Messrs. Bryant and A. will with hoewever
for advice from home, no letters for me today, great sensasion rumor, that General Lee is marching in this city with 100,000
men, good for the amount it is worth. This has been an exceedingly dull day. One of the longest I have experienced, have been
troubled with [enemeies], all day a good long letter from somebody would set me to rights again [illegible] for someone.
