Very cold day, old [illegible] howling [dismally] and very impudent to those who venture out at work as usual in the office
no great amount of work today. war news meagre. [Hovel] has been driven by Thern as until the don't know himself where he
is unsuccessful attempt to open the long talked of Dutch Gap Canal, the Army of the Potomac are doing their best to keep themselves
warm, the Enemy frequetly making attempts to surface our pickets but with poor sucess, in the Afternoon wrote to Cousin David
Underdown, "mary" letter for "dis chile" today do not understand why late this evening revieved a letter from cousin Phenia
Millagage the first one I have ever recieved from her, in the evening commenced and wrote quite a long letter to [illegible/code
symbols] although I have not recieved any letter, will finish in the morning it has been a very cold day with some snow, have
a cold and sore throat, should like much to be at home tonight, birthday of [illegible/code symbols].
