Tomoya Kawakita, a Japanese American citizen who resided in Japan during World War Two, was convicted of treason against the
United States in 1947 for torturing American prisoners of war. After losing his appeal, Kawakita received a death sentence
in 1952 that was later commuted by President Eisenhower
